Chapter 04: The last game

The handball team girls were in circle. They looked to each other by the corners of the eyes, worried, while the coach dumped requirements.

“I hope that the embarrassment of the first time does not repeat in the next one. I did not train you over so many months to lose the most important game. I hope... No. I demand more attention, more focus. Where were you with your heads? Some teen soap opera? Celebrities' gossip?”

No one replied. They kept targeting the ground. They really had been massacred by the home team. There was no excuse. Were the best throughout the whole season; defeated the best and worst teams and were now in the final.

“I want your minds in that game. Today will be the ultimate night. You have thirty minutes to reverse the score and win that trophy. Do not make me leave as the coach of the losers. Many will pay if that happens, you hear me? Especially you. Any comments?”

Not a word. The coach turned to one of them.

“Goalie?”

Daniela was still staring at him. Never lowered her head to anybody.

“Do not abandon your position again, understand? The rest of the team is here to do exactly what you did. The only goal. All of you heard me?” Rhobson spat while raged, a vein leaping in his forehead, red as a ripe tomato. “Besides defending goals, Daniela needs to do them too?”

“I can handle.” She straightened her fringe behind the ear, her firm stance.

“The issue is not you handle it or not,” he interrupted, less hectic. “I know what you are capable to do, my dear. The point is that we are dealing with a team. In teams, each has its function. Yours is to stay in the goal and defend. If you had not ventured into the field in the first half we would not have been bombed. Therefore, one more time, remain in your position.”

Turning his back to the circle of downcast players, Rhobson addressed the corridor.

“It is not time to be beaten.” Taking the whistle hanging on his neck chain, he continued. “It's time to crush. Or I'll crush you.”

At a sign from the trainer, they raised their faces and stared at each other. Daniela whispered.

“Don't mind him, girls. Let's do what we do best.” Her infectious smile encouraged her colleagues , as a vaccine against all the bad energy transmitted by Rhobson.

On the way up to the court, she was explaining something neither the coach had noticed. On the opposing team there were two players who did not stand, but were responsible for passes leading to the goal.

Daniela used to perceive the most subtle details and always helped the team. She was the link that kept them sane after Rhobson bouts of. Even him could not bash her. She had something in her eyes that calmed people.

That night, however, all his charisma would be useless to what would come.

Lights on full power burst from the spotlight around. Shouts of joy escaped from the crowded bleachers. Such agitation did nothing to calm down the girls. After all, they were from Araraquara, the visitors. The fans was supporting the house, Jaboticabal.

Daniela was positioned, concentrating on each movement, partners and opponents. Never missed a throw. Had taken five goals due to attempts to score goals. Could not repeat the slip, although it was slightly hard to concentrate one hundred percent. But she needed to.

The alarm indicated the beginning of the second half.

She felt an itch to get out of his position. First, because the ball did not come to her in the first five minutes. Second, because she realized that was exactly the strategy of the enemy team. Stalling as they could and keep at an advantage. Leering, she noticed that Rhobson had been aware of the trap. His face was red, contorted in squalling.

Accustomed to the strong light, Daniela risked a quick peek at the crowd. They were clustered in every part except one. A circle had formed near the main entrance, where people were moving away. It seemed a fight. She tried to concentrate on the game, but she failed. Something sneezed in the white shirt of a guy in the stands. Blood. Lots of blood. People began to move away even more; however, due to lack of empty space they fell upon each other. The game could not stop because of a fight between rednecks, but it was something more serious.

Suddenly the blow. Then darkness.

Voices in the distance.

“Dani. Get up. Quick!”

Hands caught her arms and lifted her up. She risked opening her eyes, but the right side of her face hurt too much. The blurred vision showed only running figures. It was not game running. It was something else.

Screams.

“He's biting me!”

“Help!”

“Blood—”

“What's going on, Tanya?” Daniela fought the feeling faint. The wallop had been violent.

Tanya, the striker, carried Daniela toward the hallway that led to the dressing rooms.

“Tanya. Who hit me?”

Daniela did not know that was just whispering the words. Her partner even realize she was talking. Everything seemed so distant. The light was replaced by shadows. The screaming echoed somewhere behind. Breathing weighed increasingly.

As soon as the light broke again, she heard a strange cry approaching.

It sounded like an animal. Or something worse.

“What—”

With no time to finish the question, Daniela was thrown on a pile of backpacks. Weakness and pain persisted, dampening her senses. Before she could turn her face, several mattresses were flung over her soft body.

Then Tanya screams of fear blended to the bestial howls.

Lastly, the goalkeeper bowed to unconsciousness.

Chapter 03: Her name is Daniela

Once the door is open, I do not expect the attack and pull it suddenly, investing against the zombie. We both fall in the wet bathroom floor.

“Stop it. Are you crazy?”

“Whatta?”

A girl. She is probably my age, around twenty-two, with dark hair in a ponytail a bit wet. She wears a white-and-red sports uniform, with a 6 printed on the chest. Her appearance is more vivid than any survivors I have ever encountered. Not even looks scared. Rather, I notice one of the corners of his mouth tugging, a smirk. She must taking me as a fool, because I do not understand diddly about what is happening, and that's clear.

“Who are ya? Where do ya come from?” I ask, still in shock.

“If you let me breathe taking your leg off my stomach, I tell you,” she says, sounding amused with the situation.

After complying with the request, I lean the bathroom door after a brief peek, just in case. I watch her stand calmly, fix the fringe behind the right ear and pick up an iron bar which must have fallen from her hand when I threw myself like a madman.

“The name is Daniela. Yours?”

“Tiago.”

“Glad to meet you, Tiago. I would not say it was a pleasure to fall like I just did, your guilt, but anyways,” she says, smiling.

I do not express the minimum draft to be amused like her.

“You're pretty serious, aren't you?”

“Lately I haven't had many reasons to laugh. Except when I step close to being eaten alive. But this should not be news to you, which, incidentally, has not told me where you came from. What about the zombie that was behind me?”

“Zombie? I was near the entrance when I saw him chasing you. Soon as he passed, I busted his head with this bar. My own He-Man's sword. So I came into the bathroom to look for you.”

“And why you didn't call me?”

“I wanted to scare you.”

Well, it seems that, of all possible survivors, I found the craziest one.

“You have a very peculiar sense of humor, huh?”

“Oh, I like to—”

“Let me tell ya something, kid. If ya did not notice, the city became an inferno. People killed each other. Everywhere we went through there defunct and blood. My family is dead. Your family is dead. We have to live in constant running to not die in the hands of those freaks wandering around. And when ya see someone fleeing desperate, what ya do? Sneak yourself to... Scare them? Ya have fed on what? Shit? I could have killed ya.”

“Well, Tiago, I do not seem to be very attentive, but yes, I noticed that my friends died in the hands of these cannibals. That's not reason to let my live and high spirit die too. Do a favor to yourself, ok? Next time you see a bunch of them, run up for a hug. They maybe  are funnier than me. By the way, go wash up yourself. You're stinking.”

Morality poured over me, the so-and-so girl turns and leaves the bathroom. I stand astonished, motionless. Who does she think she is to tell me how I should or should not live after all that I went through? This discussion is not over yet.

I look if nothing of mine fell on the floor and I follow her. At the exit of the aisle, I pass over the zombie that chased me earlier. His face is distorted, the skull smashed. That nuts had no mercy. I understand why he had not shouted as others when he saw me. His mouth is lacerated, the tongue completely uprooted.

I run into the empty sport court. There are several red stains on the floor, crates and bags spread in the stands. More ahead I see the girl going by where players used to enter when alive. My attention turns to the purses, backpacks and bags scattered around. Can I find something useful or my good-natured fellow will have already made the clean?

In the locker room the light is brighter. In a corner there is a jumble of sleeping mats, empty packages of cookies and pan breads, fruit peels and plastic bottles, all consumed. The locker doors are open, displaying clothes, shoes, toiletries, towels, mobile, notes, coins. Lots of junk.

“You can stay if you want,” Daniela says, appearing from behind a cabinet.

“Scaring people is a hobby of yours?”

She smiles shyly. I did not try to reciprocate. I don't know her. With a gesture she indicates a blue seat behind me while she sits on a mat. From behind it, she pulls a bottle and take a good drink of water. She must have noticed my bright eyes when I see the bottle; she throws another to me then, which I catch in the air. While I quench my thirst, she tells her story.

Chapter 02: Still there's survivors

Those bastards do not get tired.

Their eyes are empty, no glare. The emitted grunts make me feel pity, I admit. While not wanting to, I try to imagine what it must feel like to be eaten by these things, with their rotten but powerful teeth rending me, fighting for my flesh.

How would be become one of them? Wandering around with the sole purpose of killing. Do they think? Feel pain? Have feelings? Everything happened so fast that nobody had time to study the disaster further. I have no idea how it started. We could not plan anything or save anyone. It was every man for himself. It was hard to see people who were part of my life being chewed, and some rising then. The zero day will never leave my head.

Above, I realize the upper branches are thick, tough. The treetop reaches a significant feet tall, high enough to hurt someone that eventually could fall. Forward, branches meet with the nearby tree, and so on. There are four to the side wall of the gym. I save my empty bottle inside the bag and close it. Time of concentration. I take a deep breath and start to climb carefully, slowly, ignoring the grunts below me. Rush is something that I do not have in moments like this. I think that's why I lasted so much.

Leather gloves protect my hands while I go climbing. As I steady my feet on the branches, I analyze every inch. I hold a thinner one above; a leap, I jump to the trunk ahead, planning a precision. My hands slip, I do not know if in moisture or bird shit, and I almost end down there amid the cursed ones. Luckily, my clothes curls and gives me time to hold in a nearby bunch of shrubs. My heart comes up to the throat and get back to the chest.

Lately I have gone through several risky situations, but I still value my life, so any sign that I'm going to fuck up makes me almost have a heart attack. On the other hand, to die this way nowadays would be a curious solution, but I prefer to leave it for another day.

I keep walking on the branches, removing leaves that cling in my hair and clothes. Halfway through the second tree, I hear an almost forgotten sound: the roar of an engine. At the corner of the block down a pickup truck comes, pursued by a gang of zombies. Humpf, zombies. Yeah, right.

I cannot see who is on the steering wheel. The windows are closed and quite dirty, like the rest of the vehicle. Taking into account the street where it appeared, must have come from the countryside. I remember my uncles and cousins who lived on a farm. How should they have died?

At a glance, I see it vanish into the opposite corner. I can not risk slipping one more time, so again I concentrate on my climbing, then I realize that my persecutors were attracted by the noise and went after it. I seek for some deaf which may have been left behind. Nobody. It's my chance.

I climb down by one of the twigs, sit on the trunk and, with an impulse, I jump on the grass which cushions the fall. Slight, I run up to the side wall where there is dry but still alive shrubs. One last checked around and I head to the main gate. Open. I walk in quietly, but before I can declare victory, I see a damned coming towards me. Where was that bastard? He does not scream like the others, but runs like a bitch. Looking for a chain, something to close the gate, I do not find a measly padlock around. Options? Just one: run again.

I'm already on the stairs when I hear the gate hit violently and the monster entering. I reach the upper floor which take me to steps extending for all over the place. I did not think twice before running down and into the dark hallway leading to the toilets. I slam the door and, seeing that there is no lock, I go straight to one of the cabins and climb up the toilet bowl. There I wait.

It takes a while until I hear the door being ajar, bumping against the tiled wall. After that comes the silence. I remain motionless, sweat sliding down my face. I feel like I'm in that position for hours, fighting the cramp that attacks my leg. The will to survive is bigger than any discomfort. I find odd the absence of grunts so characteristic, which increases my tension. By the noise, he is opening the cabins doors, one after another. I wish it was a horror movie cliche and I was hiding behind the last one, but I do not know which one I hid.

Upon hearing the cabin door being opened nearby, I feel the blood move through my veins so wildly that seems milkshake in a blender. With sweating hands beneath the worn glove, I swallow hard and prepare myself to attack. At least it will not be so easy to catch me, you son of a slut, God rest her soul.

I look down and watch a shadow standing in front of me. I lose control over my breathing; adrenaline makes my body shake, rampant.

Chapter 01: Run with no looking back

The mother fuckers seem to feel my smell.

I barely turn off the flashlight, the three of them come to the freezer and surround it, scratching the top like animals, curious. Sometimes I believe to understand what they “say”.  It must be sad, a pseudo life, without a choice, damned to wandering in a world full of carrion. Sad as mine, obliged to keep a no-end running, to sleep with an eye open, avoid turning myself one of them. Then I remember how capable of destruction they are, shattering women, men, even children, like it was something natural, like they wasn’t created by God. I let that thought go away. I could never get their “language”.

About God: still believe Him, as far as possible. Respect Him, fear Him and use to pray. I had found survivors who blame Him for all this mess. Will be God to blame? Or the guilty is just ours, the truly responsibles to attract that hell? My opinion, no one is innocent. I am not; you, possible reader, neither. Innocence was lost a long time ago. And when you lose it, give up. You’ll never find it again.

The freezer is out of power, my luck, or else I would be a piece of ice cream right now. Besides, power is a thing you don’t see in every corner since the outbreak has begun. The filled places became rare. This one, happily, isn’t in the list. I’m inside for a while, fenced by rotten meat. The smell is loathsome, gives me nausea, but is my only option.

Turning on the flashlight one more time, it starts to fail. I look for something that can support me in the escape, but I guess it’s going to be harsh get out using meat.

Then a hole. Not wide enough to let me pass through, but maybe allow me distract them. Writhing my entire body, I feel something slimy on my arm skin and twitch the lips fighting against a gag reflex. I fail. A subtle noise make them excited. Fuck! The scratches become punches. Will that things know to open closures? Well, certainly I won’t be the one to teach them.

Through the hole, where should be the engine, I can see the bastards in a mirror on the wall. Only their backs are visible, dressed with bloody clothes. They seem too focused on the closure to notice my moves.

Taking advantage of the tight space as I can, grab a chunk of meat, pass through my arm by the passage and, just one shoot, it falls behind a countertop. In the mirror I see all three of them suddenly turning back and seek for the sound. My shot.

Wary, I push the cover to run as fast as I can. Dammit! Those butchers must have stuck the cap when punching. I push and push and nothing happens. I can’t believe it! My turn to beat. I get up with difficulty, my feet tangled in the mass of rottenness, and a shoulder push. Three strokes and it opens.

The oxygen invade in a split second. There’s time even to breath. As I had imagined, the fuss attracted them. Their senses are unusual, and do not hesitate before attacking. The time is barely enough to get up on the side and jump over them, landing, rolling and running through the front door, shutting it to delay them.

I never thought my Parkour abilities could help me this way. When I had a regular life used to train a lot. I loved to climb trees, walls, increase my jumps. Once I even published videos on Youtube. Pure exhibitionism turned survival techniques.

Running throught the avenue, I divert from broken cars and spread out garbage, while ferocious screams and quick steps get closer. Jaboticabal, a Sao Paulo' small town, was taken by death. Almost seventy thousand inhabitants forgotten from the rest of the world. Each of the streets are spotted with one pool of blood, at least. There’s no birds in the sky. Animals ran away before get devoured. Human instinct sucks.

Keeping my strength, I run without a break, focused on gymnasium side park trees. A corner overcomed and the screams gets numerous, louder. I start a laugh, a chuckle, uncontrolled, but don’t lose my breath. A few foot from my goal, take a deep breath, maintain focus, and go up with a wall run, just my right feet against the wood. A second and I get the top of the tree. Big, ancient, with thick and old roots.

Some fragile branches broken and fall over the cannibal group starting to agglomerate around. They keep grunting and pointing  the hands to me. Some of them try to hold above, but despite speed, their coordination is not too good.

That have frightened me in beginning; now is part of my routine. Running until get breathless, do not looking behind. This is my life. Don’t mean that I am accustomed. Nobody can be with killers always surrounding, but I am resigned.

Reclining myself over a strong twig I calmly take my breath without getting my eyes away from the accursed. Slowly my heartbeats get back to normal. In my backpack I look for something to eat. There’s some mature bananas. Two of them exploded and turn the inside a sticky mess. I hate when that happens! Only one of my three squeeze bottles have water, half of it. I relive the dryness in my throat as I can, drier than their skin. I rummage inside my backpack, knowing at my deep that there’s nothing else to find. Hunger hurts my stomach. Don’t eat real food a long time. The stench took over any hint of serviceable food. I may find something in the gym.

After feeling the last drop running through my throat, I scrape the backpack inner and take the smashed bananas. I am not in position to waste. Slowly chewing, I try to find a way to arrive safe in the gymnasium.

Prologue

I have no idea what day it is.

These past weeks, survival became more usual than checking dates on the calendar. Days became longer and exhaustive while waiting for salvation... or an end. But if you think about it, the end always come. Soon or later.

I don't think this story will be told again someday, as finding people has become a rare event. I guess no one will last long the way things are. And when I say people I mean the real kind, who breath and talk, not those damned cannibals lurking around every corner, every abandoned building, full of flies attracted by the stench that filled the air. Smell of death.

I wonder if someday everything will once again be as before. If cars will run again through the streets, polluting the atmosphere in cities inhabited by selfish and concerned only with their lives, while accumulating money and disappointments. If broadcasters will be back to report disasters. If ... I guess the world has not changed so much. The few survivors that remain are still selfish and only care about their own ass. They act like dumb animals, either the living or the "dead" walkers. By the way, I must stop writing 'cause there are three of them outside this freezer. Searchin' for food - in this case, me. I gotta get away quietly. If they find me, I'm screwed. And of course, I want to avoid that as much as I can. Basically, I believe my hope will never die.

Turning off the flashlight.

The beginning

First of all, forgive my not-so-good english.

I use to aim high.

I'm hang tough, never waiting things happen. Where's the fun gettin' everything so easily?

When I was invited to launch my debut novel I was ecstatic, of course. I won't say the typical "I could not believe it was true" because Dead Land was well accepted while I was still writing the blog (one of the best phases). When you gets the chance to release a book, the idea is to sell a lot and soon be known as a writer. Well, not exactly.

In Brazil people are reading much more, I have no arguments against it. But there is prejudice. Brazilian does not read Brazilian writers. In the lists of the most widely read here, 90% are foreign authors. There is encouragement from the "colleagues", the also beginners authors, but they don't bother to read your book and just want to lick my boots, so I'll read them. The worst excuses: "I have not bought your book yet, but is on my list" or "When I have money, I'll buy your book." Apologies...

Since childhood, my biggest dream was to live in the U.S.. Don't ask me why. Perhaps because of the movies, my passion, or the quality of life, or just because of the language. Turning English all looks more beautiful.

Thinking about it - and many other points - I decided to take Dead  Land as well. I will not say it did not sell here. Sold well, thank you very much. All the reviews I received was great. There is one negative or another, of course. It's not perfect. But it was enjoyed. So if I can submit Dead  Land to other people and countries, why not do it?

It's like starting again, just like I did four years ago. I want to go through the same paths, new readers, suggestions. So please comment and tell me what you think. If my English is a mess, please correct me. If you have something to say, do it. You are welcome. I'm like a sponge. I absorb.

The first chapter is almost translated and will be posted soon. I hope you enjoy a good zombie story. Better, I hope you enjoy a great zombie story. Is that what you'll have here.

See you soon.

A little revision about Dead Land

Hello, infected.

I am Tiago Toy and live in Brazil. I'm author of Dead Land saga (Terra Morta in Portuguese), that imagines a zombie apocalypse in a Sao Paulo' small town.

Dead Land began as a blog on August 15, 2008, when I still lived in Jaboticabal, at Sao Paulo countryside. It was an unpretentious hobby, which drew attention of people throughout Brazil, Portugal and USA. By Twitter @tiago_toy my current editor Erick Sama, from Editora Draco, has found the blog and invited me to launch Dead Land on book format. Obviously I accepted. Who wouldn't?

For over a year reviewing, aiming to transform the story into something worthy debut as a fiction writer, Dead Land hit the shelves and websites of the largest bookstores in the country. And the infected ones are always coming. Facebook, Orkut, Twitter, Blogspot ... They are coming from everywhere!

I wanna go to far with this story infecting people at first sight. Reviews are super positive, thank God and the efforts of those involved. And thinking about it I decided to create the English version of the original Dead Land blog - http://terra-morta.blogspot.com/ - especially for my friends Marco Aguilar and Cheyenne Lowman, and the world.

The first book of the series, Dead Land: Escape, had his first afternoon autograph session last Sunday, 04/12, and was very nice. The second one, Dead Land: Infection, is already in production and will be released next year. Then will be released a comic book and a book of short stories, written by readers and some guest writers, all based in the Dead Land universe.

While the infection does not spread around the world, I will do my part and infect them through the Worldwide Web, which began the same way in Brazil. I'm sure that once you start reading the Prologue, will have no return.

So do not try to fight against. Will be in vain. The infection has no cure.
